Making an Impact

"When I got home, I felt as excited as a little leaguer after seeing Yankee Stadium for the first time." Lee Shaw explained. "I was pumped! I couldn't wait to tell everyone about my trip." And because of his excitement about his 2005 missions trip to Mexico, his niece was part of the annual Geoprobe group that returned hom in March from the 2006 Mexico expedition.

clinic
The 2005 Mexico Missions Team works on a medical clinic in Xibtla (pronounced Shee-pla), about 175 mi. southeast of Mexico City. Each year, the mission team (usually 9 to 12 people) spends a week in country targeting a variety of projects.

Mexico is just one of the countries that Geoprobe® employees have gone to during the past few years to lend a hand of support. The goals of the trips are simple: work beside the people, play beside them, talk with them, share with them, pray with them, and study with them. “We learn that God’s love transcends the English language,” Larry Screen, Geoprobe® Engineer said. “We and the people are able to see and feel His love without understanding a word being spoken!”

Women in Mexico
Larry Screen (in dark cap): “We visited an elderly woman in her home. In spite of her modest lifestyle, she was so generous to me, a complete stranger. She was very gracious and hospitable, and I will never forget her.”

“These trips are a purposeful response to the example Jesus set for us,” Mel Kejr, Geoprobe® President and one of the coordinators of the Mexico misions trip said. “Our method is to use our technical skills in real and practical ways. Our goal is to reflect the image of Christ as we work, play, and pray with them.” 2006 is the fourth year a team of Geoprobe® workers have gone to Mexico. The roads are rough, the elevation is high (about 9000 feet), and the terrain is steep. But none of this seems to have an impact on anyone’s enthusiasm who has ever gone on the adventure.

Words from our workers..

Larry Screen, Engineer Larry Screen, Geoprobe® Engineer, has been to Mexico twice: “I go there to work and serve, but I always come away being served. I realize more each time I’m there how God is at work in the these peoples’ lives, and in mine.”

Sheldon Lilak, Geoprobe® Assembly (right), a two-year missions veteran, puts stucco on outside walls of living quarters: “Each time I’m there I realize our work doesn’t have immediate results, it’s an ongoing project. Returning the second year was exciting to see how relationships with the people deepened in spite of the language barriers.”
Sheldon Lilak, Assembly

Larry Thompson, Machinist Larry Thompson, Geoprobe® Machinist, a seasoned three-year veteran: “I saw a lot of change in the people the second year I was there. It was like seeing old friends.”

Mark Kroeker, Geoprobe® Purchasing, constructed forms for upright columns at the medical clinic. “It was a bit of a culture shock: no running water, no electricity, donkeys were used for transportation. But it was a way for me to share the bond of Christ’s love. I definitely want to go back.”
Mark Kroeker, Purchasing

Lee Shaw, Customer Service Lee Shaw, Geoprobe® Customer Service, a rookie in 2005: “I had a few expectations about my first trip. But I had no idea what God had in mind for me! I was there to help, but I always ended up on the receiving end!”

Jeff Kough, Geoprobe® Inventory Management, went to Xibtla in 2003: “As I worked on the clinic, I realized that these people risk everything to find and follow Jesus. I also realize I have it pretty easy at home.”
Jeff Kough, Inventory Management
