420M is "The Way to Go!"

The 420M Machine CoreProbe International, Inc. purchased last year has “performed beautifully,” according to Stewart Graham, President of CoreProbe, “and it has definitely proven its value!” Specifically purchased to complete an EPA study in southern California, the 420M went to work the day after it arrived in San Gabriel. The study lasted about three months, and CoreProbe completed approximately 900 linear feet of borings to 20-feet bgs using Macro-Core® continuous sampling. The contract with CH2M Hill required that the borings be done close to the foundations of a large number of single-family residential dwellings. “Best of all,” Stewart said, “the contract was completed within budget.” At the present time, the CoreProbe field team uses

“The 420M Machine has allowed us to complete more detailed investigations in areas we previously would have had to use hand auger equipment. Eliminating cave-in and probing more quickly has helped our field efficiency and data reliability. Our clients regularly request the 420M rig, too.”

the 420M rig for a variety of limited access jobs for machine shops used by the aerospace industry, at various dry cleaners sites, and for projects that are difficult to reach using other subsurface machines. Stewart said one of the most appealing features of the machines was its ability to maneuver inside plating facilities where interior materials-handling systems, utilities, and ductwork make access, setup, and operation difficult. “We’re doing chemicals injections, soil gas sampling, soil core sampling, and groundwater sampling with this rig.,” he continued. “Since the plating facilities are so logistically complicated, the 420M machine is the only way to go to get this work done.” CoreProbe used the 420M in a machine shop and continuously cored borings to 20 feet bgs “within some very cramped conditions,” Stewart said. “The job was so successful,” he added, “that the client increased the scope to include more subsurface information. It’s always good when your client is pleased and adds to the project.” Since the 420M requires an auxiliary power source, hydraulic hoses are used to connect the machine to a hydraulic pump in the carrier vehicle where tooling and supplies are also stored. “Because of its performance so far, I believe the 420M is going to be in high demand in the future,” Stewart concluded.

“We mounted our 420M on a MarshMaster buggy. We use this setup for standard Macro-Core® sampling, SP15 groundwater sampling, for installing prepacked screens through 2.125-in. rods, and a significant amount of EC logging. The maximum depth attained was 53 feet with the EC system, far beyond our expectations. We plan to use this setup for 15- to 20-ft MC holes in marshy environments in the future.”

“Our 420M unit significantly increased our Geoprobe® business in six months! We thought the unit would be out 1 or 2 times per month, never expecting it to be booked at least 3 times per week!”
